Failure to Launch

What is failure to launch?

Failure to launch can be a frustrating experience as a young adult struggles to leave home and live independently. It might leave the parents wondering if they’ve done something wrong or made a mistake in their child’s upbringing. It can make the person struggling to transition feel inadequate and stressed.

The truth is, many young adults will need more support at some point during the transition to adulthood.

The rite of passage into adulthood.

Regardless of the underlying issue, failure to launch can be defined as the inability to leave home and support oneself. Failure to launch (or even failure to thrive) may appear make the young adult appear to be “stuck” or not maturing in an age appropriate way.

Young adults usually find the rites of passage into adulthood enabling and encouraging (such as attending college or having a full-time job). But for some, these changes might cause regressive behavior.

What might show a failure to launch?

  • Poor work ethic
  • Low distress tolerance
  • High expectations of others without reciprocation
  • Inability to take responsibility
  • Lack of vision
  • Narcissism
