LGBT Issues

LGBT Overview

The acronym LGBT represents those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It is sometimes expanded to LGBTQIA, which encompasses a greater number of individuals including queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual.

Being a member of the LGBTQIA community (or questioning one’s sexuality) often comes with real or feared social stigma, feelings of isolation, and rejection. And can lead to anxiety, depression, or using unhealthy ways of coping such as heavy drinking, drug use, or hypersexuality.

Common Issues Facing LGBT People Today

Although there has been growing cultural acceptance of LGBT people, there is still ongoing oppression, discrimination, and marginalization of individuals that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer.

The result is more pressure and more stress, which can lead to higher levels of depression and anxiety, as well as substance and drug use.

LGBT youth are at an increased risk of self-harm, especially when experiencing discrimination based on sexual or gender identity.

Discrimination can include social rejection, bullying, and sexual assault, just to name a few. Repeated bullying can lead to diminished mental health.

Therapy for LGBT, Gender, and Sexual Identity Issues

Although many therapists may be qualified to help someone that identifies as LGBT, it helps to work with someone who specializes in LGBT affirmative therapy and has experience working with those who are struggling with issues that are directly or indirectly related to their LGBT identity.

If you or a loved one are facing issues related to your sexual orientation or gender identity, therapy can help.
