Sexual Functioning Overview & Therapy’s Role

Sexual dysfunction is an issue that can occur at any part of the sexual response cycle. At its crux, it prevents you from experiencing sexual pleasure.

The sexual response cycle includes excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. And while sexual dysfunction is more common than we think, it’s still something that not many people want to talk about.

Dysfunction can manifest through a lack of desire, inability to get aroused, delay or absence of orgasm, or pain during intercourse.

What causes sexual dysfunction?

Physical causes: Many physical conditions can cause problems with regular sexual function. These can include diabetes, heart disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, alcoholism or drug abuse, and kidney or liver failure. Some medications can also negatively affect sexual function.

Psychological causes: Things like work-related stress, concern about performance, relationship problems, depression, or effects of past sexual trauma can all play a role.

What does treatment look like?

Treatment for sexual dysfunction may include addressing the underlying physical or psychological problems.

For some, this include medication that improves blood flow or improves hormone deficiencies. Others will benefit from sex therapy, behavioral treatments, psychotherapy, and education and communication.

The success of treatment for sexual dysfunction can be dependent on the underlying cause of the problem. The key is to take the first step so that you can resolve
