Relationship Issues

What is relationship counseling?

Sometimes also called couples counseling or couples therapy, relationship counseling is a form of psychotherapy that helps people improve their romantic relationships. Couples work on exploring issues in their relationship, work on communication, and resolve conflicts.

Commonly used to address problems, relationship counseling can be beneficial at any stage of a relationship. Even people in happy, healthy relationships can still benefit from counseling, usually in the form of strengthening communication and connection.

When should you seek relationship counseling?

Although counseling is often sought after when separation or divorce is eminent, it can begin much sooner: such as when relationship problems get in the way of your life. Here are some reasons why people seek relationship counseling:

  • Trouble expressing feelings to each other
  • Disagreements that have no conclusions
  • Feelings of withdrawals, contempt, or criticism
  • Stressful events changing your daily life
  • Infidelity, addiction, or abuse
  • Seeking a stronger relationship

How do you make relationship counseling effective?

To get the most out of it, relationship counseling depends on your willingness as a couple. Things like preparing for discomfort, being honest, listening to your partner, and putting in the time can make a big difference when actively practiced during therapy.

If you are facing challenges in your relationship, counseling can help. It can help you uncover the root of your problems, opening new channels of communication, and rekindling your connection with one another.
